20810511 - SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS SELECTION IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

The course aims to provide the elements and methods useful for a critical materials selection, used in the various fields of civil engineering, evaluating not only the fundamental characteristics such as performance, compliance with regulations and costs, but also those linked to aspects that have recently acquired greater importance, such as sustainable adoption, the impact on the carbon footprint and the water footprint, the "nRe" criteria (Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Refurbish, Remanufacture, Recycle, Recover), wellbeing, green and digital aspects.
The overall properties of the materials of interest will be described with a focus on advanced materials and the potential of computer-assisted choice (DDD, Data Driven Decision) will be illustrated with the same basic requirements satisfied.
Subjects:

• sustainability in the choice of materials for civil engineering
• Life-Cycle-Analysis (LCA), renewable resources, energy efficiency and use of waste, relating to the use of materials in civil engineering
• Phenomenological aspects of degradation (due to corrosion and/or wear) in materials for civil applications, of applicative interest for a specialist industrial engineer
• Focus on advanced materials for civil engineering:
o Advanced concrete: from traditional to green
o High performance steels
o Innovations in composite materials
o Nanotechnologies and surface engineering applied to civil engineering
o Recycled plastics and natural materials
o Innovative and intelligent materials for sustainable transport.
o Innovative and intelligent materials for water engineering.
o Innovative and intelligent materials for construction engineering and natural risk mitigation
Students will acquire the skills necessary to (1) select the most suitable materials based on the design specifications, (2) understand the most recent innovations for improving the performance of advanced materials for civil engineering, (3) understand how the phenomena of degradation can alter the operational performance of advanced materials for civil engineering.

The course on Sustainable Selection of Materials for Civil Engineering falls within the scope of the characterizing activities of the SSD ING-IND/22.

The teaching program is structured as follows:

Methods and models for the critical selection of materials in civil engineering: use of the "Cambridge Engineering Selector" and related procedures. Case studies applied to the fields of civil construction, roads, water engineering and sustainable mobility.
Degradation of civil engineering materials and wet corrosion. Electrochemical aspects of degradation, forms of wet corrosion, Pourbaix diagrams, corrosion kinetics, ddp and theory of mixed potentials – passivity, corrosion in natural environments and in hostile environments, methods of prevention, protection, diagnosis and monitoring. Case studies of interest for civil engineering (e.g. Morandi bridge). Basic concepts of Life-Cycle-Analysis (LCA), renewable resources, energy efficiency and use of waste, relating to the use of materials in civil engineering.
Recent developments related to advanced materials for civil engineering:
• Advanced concrete: from traditional to green
• High performance steels
• Innovations in composite materials
