Research budget
According to Article 9, paragraph 4 of Ministerial Decree 226/2021, each PhD student, including PhD students without a scholarship, is entitled to a research budget for activities in Italy and abroad equal to 10% of the scholarship amount. This budget may be used, subject to authorization by the PhD Board:
- to undertake trips in Italy and abroad: in the Link identifier #identifier__179014-1travel request form, indicate the PhD coordinator as the person responsible for the funds and “10% Research Budget” as the project;
- to register for conferences, seminars, etc.;
- to purchase consumable materials for research (e.g. chemical reagents, audiovisual media, photocopies, stationery, electrical and electronic materials);
- to cover publication costs (including open-access publication fees);
- to obtain specific research-related training (e.g. language courses);
- to purchase books and articles, both in print and digital format;
- to purchase IT tools supporting research (e.g. software licenses);
- to purchase IT equipment supporting research (e.g. personal computers, tablets, monitors, keyboards, webcams, graphics tablets).
Travels and Periods Abroad
A “travel” refers to a trip for a conference, workshop, PhD school, or similar event. To request authorization to undertake a trip, you must complete the Link identifier #identifier__135269-2travel request form mentioned above.
A “period abroad”, on the other hand, refers to a period of time (typically several months) spent at a university or research institution abroad, visiting and working with a professor. To request authorization for a period abroad, you must complete the Link identifier #identifier__195333-3request form for the authorization for a period abroad, which also includes the request for an increase in the scholarship amount. Together with this form, you must submit an invitation letter from the host professor. Even in the case of a period abroad, it is necessary, for medical insurance purposes, to complete the Link identifier #identifier__99636-4travel request form. Through this form, you may also request reimbursement of travel expenses, provided that the person responsible for the funds agrees. During the period abroad, the PhD student must send a letter every month, countersigned by the host professor, confirming their stay abroad and specifying the dates covered by the letter.
Access to University IT Services
At the beginning of the PhD program, each PhD student is assigned an institutional account, which allows them to access the resources provided by the University, including Link identifier #identifier__52743-5email and the Link identifier #identifier__39817-6Office package. The Department has also purchased Overleaf licenses, which can be requested from the head of your research group.

University Library System
The Link identifier #identifier__71957-15University Library System page describes the library resources available to PhD students, who can access them using their institutional credentials. The University has also established numerous agreements with some of the largest academic publishers, whose resources PhD students can access using their institutional credentials.
Issuance of Diploma and Certificates
Once the PhD degree has been awarded, certificates confirming the award of the degree and the corresponding official diploma can be requested by contacting the University’s Research Office at Link identifier #identifier__93152-16ricerca.nazionale@uniroma3.it.
